Real-Time, Secure Notifications if You’ve Purchased at a COVID Hotspot.
COVID Hotspot Alert gives Australians peace of mind for confidential, real-time notifications if they have spent in a COVID hotspot or venue of concern. Think of it like your personal contact tracer.
Opt-in to get notifications directly to your phone when you have used a credit or debit card at a COVID Hotspot location, or in a COVID Hotspot suburb location.
COVID Hotspot Alert, powered by Adatree, uses the secure, safe and highly regulated Consumer Data Right ecosystem to identify when somewhere you have purchased has been designated by the government as a COVID Hotspot location.
Within minutes of the government releasing a new COVID venue of concern, you are notified so you can take appropriate action to keep yourself and the community safe.
Forgot to check in? Forgot to check the latest COVID venue list? This service works alongside QR Check-in, and your data is not shared with the government.
How Does it Work?
A customer signs up to receive COVID Hotspot Alerts and consents to sharing their card spend data. Data will only be used for the purpose of alerting customers when they have spent in a COVID Hotspot.
A customer spends using either a debit or credit card.
The location where the customer spent at is listed as a COVID exposure site.
Customer purchase data and COVID exposure site data are analysed and matched with machine learning in near real-time.
A customer receives an alert directly to their phone notifying them that they have purchased at a COVID exposure site with next steps on how to manage their exposure and risk.
When a customer no longer wants to receive texts they can withdraw consent at any time and their data is deleted.
If You Are….
Checking lists of exposure sites four times a day?
Relying on friends or family to tell you when there’s new COVID cases near you?
Just overwhelmed with lockdown fatigue?
Forgetting to check-in via QR code?
Worried about delays in exposure site update notifications?
Then COVID Hotspot Alert is another tool to help you understand your exposure risk and keep the community safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
First you complete the form and join the waitlist. It is specific to your state and banks. We currently are able to receive consented data from 96% of Australian banks and credit unions, so we can add you if your bank is available.
You share your consent through a regulated and consistent process that takes about a minute. You agree to share your data with Adatree, a regulated Data Recipient, for a specific purpose. In this case, the purpose is receiving personalised alerts if you have spent at a COVID hotspot.
After confirming with Adatree, you are redirected to your bank, where you confirm and authorise that you would like to share your data. After you confirm this, the process is complete. You'll receive confirmation of this by SMS, and we'll notify you if there are any matches of hotspots and your data.
You can watch what the consent process looks like here.
While COVID Hotspot Alert works with 96% of banks and credit unions, we don't want you to sign up if your bank isn't available. We can notify you when your bank or credit union is available for the service. We anticipate every bank and credit union should be ready in early November.
We ask for your location since COVID Hotspot Alert is first launching in NSW. We will launch in QLD, VIC and other states soon. The delay is because each state exposes different data of COVID hotspots and in different formats.
You can opt out at any time by logging into your consent dashboard and updating your consent.
You will only receive a text message when you transact at a venue or in a location of concern. As you will only receive when you transact at a COVID Hotspot location, the number of texts messages you receive is determined by your spending habits.
The Consumer Data Right (CDR) is a heavily regulated tool which gives consumers ownership over their own data. The first rollout from 2020 has been in the banking sector. The CDR gives consumers the right to access their own data from banks and other financial institutions and share it with accredited third parties known as Accredited Data Recipients (ADR).
Yes. The Consumer Data Right is a highly regulated ecosystem for data sharing. Your data will only be shared with an Accredited Data Recipient, in this case Adatree, who has passed numerous security audits to receive their accreditation. Your data is collected and matched in an environment with the highest levels of protection and security and an audited ASAE3150 compliant environment.
The COVID Hotspot Alert is an additional tool for keeping track of whether you may have been exposed to COVID at a Hotspot location. It is to be used as a supplement to the QR code system.
COVID Hotspot Alert receives your transactional banking data, any transaction that you put on either your debit or credit card of your nominated account. We only receive data for the explicit purpose of matching card spend data with COVID Hotspot locations. Your data will not be used for any other purpose.
Adatree, as the Accredited Data Recipient, will not share your data with anyone, ever. Since we’re regulated as an ADR, we are legally bound to comply with this, which is outlined in the Competition and Consumer (Consumer Data Right) Rules 2020.
Adatree is Australia’s leading Consumer Data Right provider. Their website covers their full product suite and also all of the Terms and Conditions of this product (link) and their Consumer Data Right Policy (link). Adatree created this policy as part of championing their cause for CDR for good.
